Jordyn Clarke says she and her block-mates have overnight become a kind of close-knit tribal community. "We look out for each other... That's all we have left," she says.

Crowbar in hand, Bill Louw sits on a bench still attached to a massive slab of boardwalk that landed in his front yard. "I've lived in the Rockaways my entire life," he says.

Residents who lost their homes and belongings endure cold temperatures waiting in line to vote in tented polling stations throughout the region.

Photojournalist Ben Lowy is covering the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, including the struggle to get to today’s polling locations, on assignment for Tumblr with an iPhone camera. He’s spent the last two days in Rockaway Beach, Queens, where thousands of residents remain displaced, and the once-famous five mile boardwalk is in splinters. Of the 28 voting locations in Queens that have been moved due to Sandy, 23 are here.
